Triumph Over Tragedy: Jose's Journey from Accident to Inspiration

JosePhotos of Jose's family, plus his drawing of a foot.On a fateful day in May 2023, Jose's life changed forever. A dedicated father of two and skilled journeyman electrician, Jose suffered a traumatic injury that resulted in the loss of his left leg below the knee. His story of survival, recovery, and renewed purpose serves as a testament to the human spirit and the critical importance of having a Level One Trauma Center in our community.

While measuring a trench depth, Jose's foot became caught in a trenching machine. His quick thinking—applying a tourniquet to control bleeding—proved crucial. Within minutes, paramedics rushed him to Chandler Regional Medical Center's Level One Trauma Center, where a team of specialists was ready to provide life-saving care.

Expert Care and Recovery. Over the next two weeks, Jose underwent a dozen surgeries at Chandler Regional. The medical team's expertise, combined with Jose's determination, not only saved his life but set him on a path to recovery. After his initial two-week hospital stay, Jose transferred to a rehabilitation hospital, facing an unexpected setback when a bone infection caused by the initial trauma necessitated a return to Chandler Regional for further amputation. Jose ultimately persevered through 111 days of rehabilitation.

"This was a profound, traumatic injury," Jose reflects. "The rehab process was painful and challenging. I had to relearn how to walk, and how to manage daily life and overall mobility."

A New Purpose Emerges. Jose's recovery journey extended beyond physical rehabilitation. He discovered new ways to cope with pain and stay mentally engaged, including drawing, mind exercises, and reading. As he adapted to life with a prosthetic leg, Jose refused to let his injury define him. Instead, he found a new calling.
Recognizing an opportunity to make a positive impact, Jose approached his employer, Tekline Electrical Services, about transitioning to a full-time role as Safety Manager. Armed with 11 OSHA safety certificates and the title of Certified Safety & Health Official, Jose now dedicates himself to ensuring the safety of his colleagues.

Inspiring Others Through Safety and Positivity.

In his new role, Jose:

  • Conducts thorough site visits using detailed safety checklists.
  • Educates peers on job-related hazards and the importance of safety protocols.
  • Implements and monitors best practices for wire installation and the prevention of heat exhaustion.
  • Inspects machinery to maintain safe operations.

Jose's journey from trauma patient to safety advocate embodies resilience and the power of a positive outlook. He starts each day with gratitude, seeing it as an opportunity for growth and self-improvement. His appreciation for life's simple joys—sunshine, nature, time with his children—inspires those around him.

The Crucial Role of a Level One Trauma Center. Jose's story highlights the vital importance of having a Level One Trauma Center in our community. As an American College of Surgeons verified and state-designated Level 1 Adult Trauma Center, Chandler Regional Medical Center provides:

  • 24/7 availability of medical and surgical specialists, with Immediate access to surgeons specializing in orthopedics, neurosurgery, cardiac procedures, and more.
  • Critical care for many of the 24,000 Arizona residents severely injured each year.

As the leading cause of death for Arizonans aged one-44, traumatic injuries require the expert care that only a Level One Trauma Center can provide. Chandler Regional's strategic location makes it an essential resource for a vast area, ensuring that patients like Jose receive the highest level of care when every second counts.

Jose's remarkable journey from patient to safety advocate demonstrates the far-reaching impact of expert trauma care. It's a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the critical role that Chandler Regional Medical Center plays in our community's health and safety.
