Annual Report

Thank You Donors!

The mission of Dignity Health Foundation East Valley is to support our health care facilities and programs in the southeast valley through philanthropy. Without the generosity of our donors, we wouldn’t have been capable of accomplishing so many great projects during our 2018 fiscal year. We are humbled to share that donations for this timeframe were just over $2.9 million.

The Launch of Dignity Rising

To continue providing world-class health care, and to prepare for the coming growth of our community, we have launched Dignity Rising.

Dr. Hassan Akinbiyi

Physician Champion 2018

The 2018 Physician Champion of the Year award is presented to our Medical Director at Dignity Health East Valley Rehab Hospital, Dr. Hassan Akinbiyi. A Foundation Board Member since 2017, Dr. Akinbiyi’s accomplishments include being our first Grateful Patient and Family Program Physician Champion, which led to our first official Grateful Patient Referral. He actively participates in the Dignity Rising Campaign Planning Committee and, in a great show of leadership, he made the first physician gift to the Dignity Rising campaign. As we roll out new Foundation strategies, Dr. Akinbiyi is one of the first to become involved and identify how our initiatives will impact the patient experience.

Amazing Patient Outcome

Shortly after retiring to Arizona from the Midwest, Larry and Teri Bobko had just moved into their new home when Teri found Larry lying on the ground – unable to speak or get up. Larry was rushed to Dignity Health Mercy Gilbert Medical Center where they received his diagnosis: Larry had suffered a stroke.

The ER team offered Larry a clot-busting shot known as TpA, which has proven extremely effective in such emergency scenarios, but it also comes with risks, such as hemorrhaging. "We've always been gamblers," Teri says, "and so I said, ‘We're going to give him that shot!' And I'm so glad that we did."

They provide leadership and direction to the Foundation to see that families in our community receive high-quality health care delivered with humankindness and dignity. And they do it all in their spare time. A big thank you to these fine folks.

Cherishing Heaven’s Hummingbirds

Brian and Jennifer Butson’s four children were born in the Lund Family Birth Center at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. Jennifer recalls with a smile, “The entire staff has been wonderful, but there’s one nurse who has always gone above and beyond for my family, Joanie Hanson-Bain.”

When sadly the Butson’s second child Bowen was delivered stillborn at just 23 weeks, Joanie changed her assignment so she could care for them during this difficult process.

Our Employees Rock

Dignity Health East Valley employees have stepped up to the plate by supporting our Dignity Rising efforts. Setting a record with their employee donation campaign this past Spring, more than $1.2 million was raised!

This level of giving demonstrates how excited they are about our future. We are humbled and grateful for our employees’ generosity.
